How to Make a Homemade Air Freshener in 3 Easy Steps

If you’re looking to freshen up your home or car, making your own homemade air freshener is an easy solution that costs far less than buying premade products from the store. And best of all, it’s super simple and takes just 3 ingredients!

Step 1: Gather the Ingredients

You’ll need just three ingredients for this air freshener: water, essential oils, and witch hazel. If you don’t have witch hazel on hand, you can also use vodka. The essential oils are up to you. Some good options include lavender, lemon, or peppermint.

Experiment with different combinations to find your favorite! Remember that some people may be sensitive to specific scents, so make sure you test them out before spritzing the whole house. Once you’ve found your perfect combination, gather these ingredients and head over to step 2.

Step 2: Mix it up:

Add one cup of boiling water to a bowl. Now add 5-10 drops of the desired essential oil and stir until well mixed. Next, add 1/4 cup of witch hazel or vodka (whichever one you chose) into the mix, stirring again. Finally, pour the mixture into an empty spray bottle with a fine mist nozzle for easy application! Step 3: Shake it Up- Spritz away! Shake up your homemade air freshener whenever it’s not being used as it may separate from sitting around too long.

Step 3: Mix Together

Next, mix together the essential oil and water in a small bowl or cup. Stir until the oil is fully diluted. Then, pour the mixture into the spray bottle. Make sure to label your air freshener so you know which scent it is! To use, simply spritz into the air as needed.

Your homemade air freshener will last up to two weeks, but may require additional sprays depending on how often you need to freshen up the space. You can also make this recipe in larger batches if you want to have some on hand for other occasions! Just double or triple the amounts of ingredients and follow the same steps.

What are your favorite scents? I like to use peppermint because it’s festive, but lavender works well too when you want something calming. Let me know what your favorite combinations are in the comments below!

Step 3: Spray Away

Spray your air freshener around the room, or wherever you want to enjoy its refreshing scent. Start with just a few sprays and see how long the scent lasts. You can always add more if needed. Be sure to test it out on an inconspicuous area first, just to be sure it doesn’t damage surfaces.

And that’s it! With just three simple ingredients, you can make your own air freshener that’s better for you and your home. It’s quick, easy, inexpensive, and gives you total control over what goes into it. Let us know what scents you use and how they work for you! We’d love to hear from you! What smells do you like?
